Understanding services from
Hospice of the Panhandle

If doctors predict that you or a loved one has six months or less to live, and you choose to focus on comfort instead of a cure, you’re eligible for hospice care. If you don’t think you or a loved one is ready for hospice care, other indicators include increased falls; more visits to the ER or hospital; and continued struggles with eating, sleeping or getting comfortable. The sooner you turn to Hospice of the Panhandle for help, the more we can do to increase comfort and quality of life.

Hospice of the Panhandle provides personalized care wherever you call home. Whether you live in a private residence, apartment, assisted living facility or nursing home, we realize you’re probably most comfortable surrounded by the people and things you love.

When complex symptoms require specialized around-the-clock medical care, or your loved one needs an appropriate setting in which to live, Hospice of the Panhandle offers our homelike Inpatient Facility. This beautiful setting features private rooms and bathrooms, family areas, gardens and much more. Tours of the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility are available by request. Call 304.264.0406 to schedule a visit.

The priority of our clinical care is to keep you or your loved one comfortable, managing pain, stress and other symptoms to the highest degree possible. Together with your physician, members of our team and your family, we create a customized care plan for your exact needs and wishes. The care plan is coordinated by our nurse manager. Our nurses monitor symptoms, vital signs and medications; change dressings; and tend to you or your loved one’s unique medical needs.

During the course of your illness, your doctors may adjust the type, dosage or frequency of a medication at any moment. Hospice of the Panhandle will communicate such changes with your pharmacy. Also, our nurses monitor and manage your prescription schedule to make sure you’re taking the right medication at the right time. In addition, changes in needs for medical equipment – such as a hospital bed or wheelchair – and medical supplies may occur as a disease progresses. Hospice of the Panhandle manages delivery and setup of the right equipment wherever you call home.

Hospice of the Panhandle’s expert team of social workers and counselors provides education and counseling for a range of needs. They also can help you understand your care options and connect you to other community resources, such as disease-specific support groups.

To help your family sort through spiritual issues to find peace and comfort, our team includes experienced chaplains. Our chaplains are specially trained to help you connect with your faith according to your individual preferences, beliefs and traditions, regardless of what faith you practice. They will gladly serve you in discussions about what you believe, prayers, meditations – or simply in providing open ears and open hearts to listen.

Serious illness can make even routine tasks difficult. Our experienced home hospice aides can help you perform the following activities or do them for you, depending on your condition and situation. Assistance from our aides is typically scheduled one to three times per week as appropriate.

  • Bathing, grooming and dressing
  • Skin care and hair care
  • Meal preparation
  • Assistance with eating or feeding
  • Changing bed linens
  • Light housekeeping/laundry
  • Toileting

Our core hospice services wherever the patient calls home are typically covered in full by Medicare, WV Medicaid or private insurance. Due to generous donations from our community, no one is denied hospice care regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay. Hospice of the Panhandle is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing care for any eligible person.

Residential care at our Inpatient Facility requires a fee. To discuss eligibility requirements, fees and insurance coverage, please call 304.264.0406.
