Volunteer opportunities

There are many different volunteer opportunities available depending on your interest and availability. Below are key volunteer jobs along with the time commitment and training required.

Patient and family care and support

  • Volunteers are matched with a hospice patient and family to provide a variety of supportive services.
  • Time commitment – Usually about 3 to 4 hours a week
  • Training required – 14 hours, direct services training

Organizational Support

Volunteers help with the operation of the hospice program. Job opportunities may include:

- Assisting with mailings
- Entering data
- Fundraising
- Helping with health fairs
- Being a part of our speakers’ bureau
- Baking
- Performing clerical work

  • Time commitment – As desired by volunteer. Opportunities to help come intermittently throughout the year.
  • Training required – Hospice 101

Inpatient Facility Reception Desk Volunteers

  • Volunteers greet visitors to the inpatient facility and answer the phone and direct calls.
  • Time commitment – As desired by volunteer. Reception desk volunteers sign up for 4-hour shifts.
  • Training required – Hospice 101

Hospice Helpers

  • Volunteers who do specific, one-time assignments for patients, such as baking, sewing, gardening and cleaning.
  • Time commitment – Varies according to the task
  • Training required – Hospice 101

11th Hour Volunteers

  • Volunteers who are on standby to sit with patients who are near death at home, in nursing homes and hospitals.
  • Time commitment – Assignments are infrequent, but usually require 4 to 8 hours at the time of the assignment.
  • Training required – 14 hours, direct services training

HTV – Hospice Teen Volunteers

  • Volunteers who are at least in their freshman year of high school.
  • Time commitment – Varies according to assignments
  • Training required – 14 hours, direct services training

Needlers and Crafters

  • Sew lap quilts, therapy pillows and memory items for hospice patients.
  • Time commitment – Variable. Volunteers work from home.
  • Training required – Hospice 101

Hospice Liaisons

  • Represent hospice to their church or workplace to help with information distribution and referrals.
  • Time commitment – 1 to 2 hours per month
  • Training required – 1.5 hour class and periodic meetings
