Program Overview

The death of a significant person in one's life can have a long-term impact. A piece from your life has been removed and now everything hangs in disarray. There is disorganization in relationships, in matters of business, even in our own identity. If we have defined ourselves through another person, we may not even know who we are now!

It helps to talk, to express feelings about the person's life and the experiences you shared. It helps to talk about the time of your loved one's sickness and dying and to share your feelings about how it all evolved. But sometimes you run out of people who will listen. You notice that your friends no longer inquire about your well-being or they completely stop talking about the person who has died. Or sometimes the death of a loved one can present challenges that seem to be more than you can bear. This is where the Grief Support Services of Hospice of the Panhandle can help.

How our Grief Support Services Can Help

The Grief Support Services at Hospice of the Panhandle provides services free of charge to any person from the community, not just hospice families, who have exoerienced the death of a loved one. Our services are provided by trained, professional counselors and provided confidentially.

Our grief counselors want to help you in any way they can. Their help may include:

  • reminiscing about your loved one.
  • problem-solving the challenges you may be facing as a result of the death.
  • helping you find ways to remember and honor your loved one while trying to carry on after the death.
  • strategies & interventions to help you manage the pain, sadness, anxiety, depression or other difficult emotions and reactions that may arise.

Services and Support

We offer a wide array of services and support than can be tailored to meet your specific grief-related needs. There is no charge for any of our services and no limit on how many services an individual receives or for how long. Our services and supports can include:

Counseling & Consultation. Our trained and licensed professional staff can provide information and answers to questions about grief, as well as provide one-on-one, family, or couples grief counseling.

Support Groups. We provide a variety of support groups intended for people to come together to share their grief, learn from others & professionals, and to find mutual support in their grief. Groups are offered periodically throughout the Eastern Panhandle. Click here for upcoming support groups.

Telephone Support. We are available to answer questions, provide counseling, or simply provide reassurance over the telephone to support you in your grief.

Workshops and Educational Programs. We periodically provide workshops and presentations on topics related to grief & loss, including understanding grief, grief and the holidays, helping someone who is grieving, and so on. These programs differ from support groups in that the programs are usually one-time events and are educational in their focus. Click here for upcoming workshops.

Grief Literature and Educational Materials. We have many brochures, handouts, and reference materials related to grief and grieving. These are available at no charge regardless of whether someone is receiving other services.

Bi-Monthly Essays on Coping with Grief. Stepping Stones is a series of mailed essays intended to assist people through common difficulties experienced following a death by providing information about grief and practical suggestions on ways of coping. People can receive these essays in the mail free of charge without receiving any other grief support services
